With many of us coming to performance evaluation season at year’s end, this article provides concrete processes to help managers view performance through a different lens this year. These particular lines really resonate as I think about providing feedback this year and my own performance: “Managers face particularly tough decisions right now. They must figure out how to reward those employees who are “stepping up” during these crises without inadvertently penalizing those who have needed to “lean out.”

You can’t control your manager but if you are an employee preparing a self-assessment, consider discussing how you have “stepped up” this year but also consider talking about challenges you have faced and how you worked through them. This will likely result in more equitable assessments in what has been a very unequal year.
