Resilience Can Make You A Happier Federal Employee

It can be hard to recognize because it requires playing the long game, doing hard work over a lengthy time period.

It often feels like a skill we know when we see it, which makes it difficult to learn and practice. But it can lead to greater happiness because it gives you a toolkit to deal when life gets tough.
​
Recently, I had a particularly difficult week both personally and professionally. At the end of the week, feeling I could bear no more, I broke down. I spent the next few days reflecting upon resilience and happiness. I realized that, by virtue of the challenges of being in government these days, we must strive to be resilient in order to be happy and successful at work.

Who Needs Sleep?

Sleep. We all know we need it. We all try to get enough of it. But according to Arianna Huffington’s latest book, The Sleep Revolution, most of us are not getting nearly enough of it. And even when we do get enough, the quality of our sleep is poor, leading to chronic exhaustion, unhappiness and lost productivity.

Helping Employees Memorialize Informal Learning

Learning is constant. Through formal or informal means, you are constantly acquiring information and putting it to work in your daily life. Formal learning is easy to identify – it takes shape as classroom exercises, webinars, or Web Based training modules. You know what you are learning because there are clear objectives and assessments for learning events.

Informal learning is more subtle. You watch a TED Talk on YouTube and you may learn a new way to complete a task, or you read an article in a magazine or blog that suggests a new way to manage a situation. You might also be watching a movie, and discover a different way to relate to someone that you never before considered.

5 Tips To Help You Talk To Your Employees About Telework

In many agencies, federal employees are taking advantage of more flexible work options. Almost a year ago, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum entitled Enhancing Workplace Flexibilities and Work-Life Programs. In the memo, the President argues that such flexibilities are essential to “attract, empower, and retain a talented and productive workforce in the 21st century.” Despite this showing of Presidential support, it can be challenging for both an employee and a manager to converse about alternative work schedules (AWS), flexible work schedules, and telework.
